Which licence do you need?
Light Motorcycle licence sub Category A1 (upto 125cc only)
17 years old or over? Only want to ride up to 125cc? After taking your CBT on a 125cc machine you can take your practical test on a motorcycle of between 75cc and 125cc allowing you to ride machines up to this capacity with a power out put of 14.6bhp (11kW) with no restrictions.
Category A licence with 2 year qualifying period
17 years old or over? Want to ride motorcycles greater than 125cc? After taking your CBT on a 125cc you can take this test on a machine between 121cc and 125cc and capable of at least 62.5mph (100 km/h). For the next 2 years you may ride any motorcycle provided it does not exceed 33 bhp (25kW). In some cases this requires you to fit a 33bhp (25kW) restriction kit to the machine and for you to retain a certificate as proof that this has been done. After this qualifying period you can ride any size motorcycle free from any restrictions and have the kit removed.
Category A licence without 2 year qualifying period via Direct Access
21 years old or over? Want to be able to ride any size motorcycle? After taking your CBT you can take your test on a machine of at least 46.6bhp (35kW) giving you unrestricted and immediate access to all sizes of motorcycle.
Accelerated Access to Category A licence
For those riders who are subject to the 2 year qualifying period and are at least 21 before this period is complete, they can take a test on a motorcycle of at least 46.6bhp (35kW) giving them a full licence free from restrictions. This would allow you to ride any size motorcycle in the same way as Direct Access.
